Some history

Our journey into the areas of lavender-growing and the Bed and Breakfast business began as a whimsical fancy when travelling throughout Victoria, and other parts of Australia, and admiring lavender fields in full bloom.

We always knew we would eventually go bush and the prospect of combining the 'Tree Change' dream with some sort of agricultural business seemed like a good idea.  And so the idea of establishing our lavender farm began.

For nearly two years we researched the business of lavender farming, and in July 2000 we found our beautiful forty acre property located in the foothills of the majestic Cathedral Ranges at Buxton.

The idea of including luxurious Bed and Breakfast cottages on such a unique farm, in such an idyllic setting, seemed like the natural progression of the dream.

South Cathedral Farm, as we subsequently christened the property, is now well established.  And I must add that without eager family and friends it would not have happened as quickly as it did!

Ultimately our aim is to have the south paddock (about twelve acres) fully planted out in lavender, and to enable our visitors to share with us the natural beauty the area has to offer, in the unique setting of a lavender farm.

In May 2002 we sought and attained membership to the Land For Wildlife scheme managed by the then Department of Natural Resources and Environment.  We felt membership to Land For Wildlife was consistent with our commitment to the conservation of the abundant wildlife who share the farm with us.

And in June 2004 we successfully secured a revegetation grant through the Department of Sustainability and Environment which funded the purchase of over 1000 native plants to revegetate the bottom section of the north paddock.

More recently we have introduced a Tree Planting Program inviting visitors to the cottages to collect a free tree from the Buxton Zoo Nursery each time you come and stay, and plant it in our revegetation area to help rebuild the local environment.

We hope you are as excited about our part of the world as we are and we hope to see you soon at South Cathedral Farm.
